RUMBLINGS: Senate says aye to Talk Like a Pirate Day

    Aaarrgghh you serious?

Last week, the state Senate voted “aye” to adopt a resolution expressing support for the state to officially recognize Sept. 19 as “International Talk Like a Pirate Day.”

Sen. Roger Kahn, R-Saginaw Township, chairman of the Appropriations Committee, donned an eye patch on the Senate floor as he spoke in support of his resolution.

“Thank you, matey! … As a Great Lakes state, one of Michigan’s main duties should be promoting worthy maritime initiatives and this, of course, is one.”

After Kahn’s hearty speech, Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer, D-East Lansing, thanked him on the Senate floor “for making the most compelling argument that he could for a part-time Legislature.”

Copies of the resolution will now be sent to Attorney General Bill Schuette, members of the state’s congressional delegation as well as the president of the U.S. Senate and the U.S. speaker of the House.

Two friends in Oregon created International Talk Like a Pirate Day in 1995, and the parody holiday has grown in popularity since.
